Your thinking of an OBD 2 system. OBD2 has two sensors, one up stream and one down. They take readings pre-Cat and Post- Cat. Then within the set parameters adjust ratios and also determine the operational status of the catalytic material. Most Z32's are OBD1. Only one O2 Sensor per a side and only on the Up-stream side. Meaning they only detect the gases coming out of the engine. Not past the convertor. So it won't trigger a check engine light because there isn't another sensor to read post flow and the ECU isn't programed to determine the operability of the cats.
